Macon, GA – Austin Scott released a statement Saturday concerning a number of issues affecting the nation’s seniors:
“I believe Social Security is an important agreement between our nation and our seniors whose terms should be safeguarded. I believe that the retirement age should not be raised, and taxes should not be increased. I am opposed to the privatization of Social Security.”

“I also believe that Democrat spending in Washington has put Social Security in jeopardy and that the first step to solving Social Security’s problems is to get spending under control and the economy back on track. Then, both parties should forge meaningful, bipartisan reform for the Social Security system that protects the promise of Social Security for the American people.”

“I think that Medicare fraud is one of the largest threats to the Medicare system and seniors. Medicare fraud and abuse raise the cost of the program, causing harm to seniors. Therefore, I support front-end verification and other common-sense solutions that prevent such abuse and crack down on criminals that cheat seniors through Medicare fraud.”

“My father is a physician and I am very familiar with the shortage of physicians that is a looming problem for Medicare beneficiaries. I believe that seniors should be secure in their access to their doctors. Doctor access and Medicare reimbursement rates are linked and Medicare cost savings should not come only from cuts to doctors.”

“I believe that Obamacare has exacerbated this problem and that the temporary fixes passed by Democrats only lead to more uncertainty and more doctors declining acceptance of additional Medicare patients. I believe that we need an equitable payment formula in Medicare that pays doctors a fair amount for their services but also holds down costs through the elimination of unnecessary duplication, waste, fraud and abuse.”

The former Macon mayor—and one of Congress’s most conservative Democrats—had plenty of cash and no significant Republican opponent. But in a reflection of his party’s fortunes nationwide, Mr. Marshall’s prospects have dimmed of late. The three-term congressman now faces an energized foe and the focus of the national Republican Party in a race that polls indicate is increasingly tight.”

“….a recent Republican poll showed Mr. Marshall leading state Rep. Austin Scott by just five percentage points, within the poll’s 5.7% margin of error. His overall support was just 44%, a bad sign for an incumbent.”

Macon, GA – While in Porterdale Friday for a town hall meeting, Jim Marshall said that he “voted against” the Wall Street bailout and that the national debt would have “doubled” if the “stimulus” bill that he voted for had not been passed. (Sebastien Wee,“Jim Marshall holds town hall meeting in Porterdale,” Covington News, 9/1/10)
These claims are both completely false. Jim Marshall voted not once, but TWICE for the Wall Street bailout. On top of that, the “stimulus” bill that Marshall voted for added billions to the deficit.

Austin Scott commented Thursday on the story that Marshall told voters, “This shows just how far Jim Marshall will go in his effort to hide his record from the people of the 8th district. This time it is an outright lie. To say that he didn’t vote to bail out the Wall Street banks when it is in the public record is unbelievable. To tell voters that the so-called “stimulus” reduced the debt is preposterous.”

Austin Scott Reaches ‘Contender’ Status
Georgia Republican Takes Critical Second Step in ‘Young Guns’ Program

Washington- The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has officially announced that Republican Austin Scott (GA-08) has reached ‘Contender’ status as part of its Young Guns program. ‘Contender’ status is the second step in the three-level program. Scott now faces a new set of benchmarks to reach ‘Young Gun’ status in his bid to retire incumbent Democrat Rep. Jim Marshall this fall in Georgia’s Eighth Congressional District, a Republican-leaning area that has been held by Marshall since 2003.

Founded in the 2007-2008 election cycle by Reps. Eric Cantor (R-VA), Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Paul Ryan (R-WI), the Young Guns program is a member-driven organization dedicated to electing open-seat and challenger candidates nationwide. By achieving ‘Contender’ status, Scott has already demonstrated his ability to build a successful campaign structure and achieve vital fundraising goals.

“Austin Scott has met a series of rigorous fundraising and campaign goals that will go a long way in helping to put this seat in the Republican column,” said NRCC Chairman Pete Sessions (R-TX). “Austin is part of a strong and growing pool of candidates who are frustrated with the Democrat majority’s big-government ways and aren’t willing to stand by any longer. The success of his campaign has put congressional Democrats on notice that Americans are ready to turn the page on the failed experiment known as the Obama-Pelosi agenda.”

Scott’s entrepreneurial background and political experience make him the ideal fit for the Eighth District. The founder of a successful insurance brokerage in Tifton, Georgia, Scott is a strong advocate for Georgia small businesses and is dedicated to a pro-growth economic agenda that will benefit Peach State families. He has served for fourteen years in the Georgia General Assembly, where he has earned a reputation for his work ethic, integrity, and solutions-oriented approach. He is committed to conservative beliefs and Republican values and will work hard to get the economy back on track. Scott and his wife, Vivien, reside in Ashburn with his ten-year-old son, Wells.

Scott now faces a new set of rigorous goals that will elevate him to the top level of the Young Guns program and help him build a competitive, effective and winning campaign.

Atlanta Conservative Examiner August 29 2010 By Mark Bureau

In 2010, in Georgia’s 8th district, there is a clear conservative choice running against the incumbent, Jim Marshall. Austin Scott is the conservative choice.

Jim Marshall backs the Pelosi/Reid/Obama agenda

Jim Marshall is currently the Congressional representative for Georgia’s 8th district. Marshall portrays himself as Blue Dog democrat; a centrist who has voted against many of the aspects of the Nancy Pelosi/Barack Obama. Make no mistake, however. Marshall is a democrat. Had Pelosi needed his vote, he surely would have given it to her when asked. This is evident dating back to 2007 when Marshall voted to support Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House. He stated that he was originally going to vote for Steny Hoyer, until it was evident that Pelosi had the votes to win. He changed his vote because he didn’t want to “stand up and stick my thumb in her eye”… by voting against her. One could conclude by that statement that if she needed his vote for any portion of her agenda, she would have gotten it. In one instance, she did get it, in the original 787 billion dollar TARP bill.

Austin Scott – the clear choice

Austin Scott is the Republican opponent to Jim Marshall in Georgia’s 8th district in November. Marshall is painting Scott as a career politician, but Scott is a staunch conservative, and not a ‘party line’ establishment republican. Scott’s voting record in the Georgia Legislature verifies that statement. In this of recession when Georgians are forced to tighten their belts, Scott voted to extend the Homestead exemption, while other Georgia Republicans and Democrats essentially voted to raise Georgians’ property taxes by as much as 10% across the board, while this current recession has seen home values decline by as much as 30%. This vote alone showed that Austin Scott is Georgia 8’s only logical choice as a true representative of the people. In casting that vote, Scott told the establishment that government doesn’t have an unlimited money tree sponsored by the hard work of Georgians. The homestead exemption ultimately failed, but Austin Scott voted on the side of the people, and not the state. He deserves the Georgia 8’s vote, because he has shown he is a true conservative and representative for the people.

In the end, while Jim Marshall votes with Nancy Pelosi and the liberal agenda a majority of the time, then comes home and talks about being a centrist, Georgians will know where Austin Scott stands all the time; at home and in Washington, DC.

Macon, GA – At a town hall meeting with voters on Friday, Congressman Jim Marshall attempted to cover his numerous votes for increased deficit spending by arguing that he had “voted against every Democratic and Republican budget.”

Marshall’s claim came as the Wall Street Journal reported that the Congressional Budget Office projects the federal deficit to rise to $1.07 trillion in 2011. As a member of Nancy Pelosi’s Democrat Caucus, Jim Marshall voted repeatedly for increased debt spending. Most recently, he voted to raise the federal debt limit to $14 trillion and also voted for a $26 billion state bailout.

Austin Scott commented Tuesday on Marshall’s argument and the massive federal debt, “Congressman Marshall is being extremely misleading by holding up his budget votes as representative of his stance on spending. He must take us for fools. We know that the real spending happens in appropriations bills and that Jim Marshall has voted for nearly every appropriations bill during his time in Congress.”
Austin Scott is in the race, this district becomes dramatically more interesting. Marshall has proven his skill since he was first elected in 2002, but he faces a difficult test this year. Marshall has done better in presidential years (2004 and 2008) than in midterms (2002 and 2006), and four years ago, during a huge Democratic wave nationally, he almost lost his seat. Move from Lean Democrat to Toss-up/Tilt Democrat.
